As we made our way along the southern coast of Spain, the pull of Ibiza became increasingly hard to resist. We knew we shouldn’t arrive too early, the island can still be in a deep winter slumber, with cooler temperatures and a sleepy atmosphere. Yet as one Dutch boat after another made the crossing ahead of us, we found it harder and harder to wait. About a month ago, we finally gave in and set sail across. And yes, it truly is a magical island.
Even in this quiet, off-season state, deserted coves, most beach cafés still closed, and the weather… (well, let’s just say the locals assure us it’s unusually unsettled for this time of year) there’s something undeniably special about this place. We dropped anchor on our first night right next to Es Vedrà, the legendary rocky islet that stirs many a mystical tale. With everything going on in the world, I choose to believe there is something more, and out there, in the stillness of the sea, it felt like we could almost touch it.
The peace of nature here is simply magical. To find yourself alone or with dear friends in a stunning bay at this time of year feels like a rare gift. Even the marinas are welcoming and affordable, with off-season rates and prime spots available. Beyond the charming old town of Ibiza itself, we’ve absolutely fallen for Santa Eulària, a small, lively village that still has its local heartbeat going strong. And with family living nearby, we were welcomed with such warmth that it truly felt like coming home.
But the highlight of our time on the island must be Portinatx. We already knew from past visits that it would steal our hearts again, but to be anchored there alongside five other Dutch liveaboard boats made the experience all the more unique. We watch each other come and go, find moments to meet, and wave each other off again. Those brief gatherings, so full of laughter, stories, and shared moments, are pure gold. There’s no one who understands the highs and lows of life aboard like fellow travellers do.
Ibiza also rekindled a new love for hiking. When there’s little external entertainment, nature becomes your playground and what an extraordinary playground it is. Whether the trails are secret or well-trodden, the views are breathtaking: rugged cliffs, wild paths, and natural beauty all around. We’ve already broken in our new hiking boots with a few climbs and scrambles, exploring as a trio, or with friends—just discovering, just adventuring.
And there was this one Sunday, where the beats did call us, when we joint a jam session in Cala Llenya, and we experienced a little bit of the Ibiza vibe… yes, we totally get it!
Of course, Ibiza also holds a deep sadness for us, as it’s the place where we lost our dear Hendrickje. That pain is still very real, a wound still healing a bit. But we don’t associate that grief with the island itself, it’s not Ibiza’s fault.
Now we’re preparing for a short crossing to the next island. Will Mallorca hold the same magic? It’s larger, promising a bit more in terms of facilities, we’re hoping it will bless us with a new dinghy! And Oma Ria is coming to visit, which we’re of course truly looking forward to. So many good things lie ahead… let the next chapter begin!
Thanks Ibiza, we will be back, for sure!!
